When I first started playing electric guitar back in 1974, I purchased a Gibson Model GA-6 guitar amplifier from a retired country player down in Tucson,AZ.. This is a 12 watt class-A push-pull amplifier with a 12 inch Jensen alnico speaker (blue frame) that has a growl to die for. The circuits used in these early Gibson models color the sound in a manner that results in a more musical sounding amplifier. Some early Fender amp models also incorporated these types of circuits. The Fender 53 Deluxe is one notable example, and is the basis for the first model of the Miniatures of the Classics Series of amplifiers.
The engineering goal of the Miniatures of the Classics Series is to develop a line of low wattage tube guitar amplifiers designed especially for recording studios and home recordists. In addition to the 53 Deluxe there are presently two other models in the series. The first is a 4 watt version of a timeless favorite, the 59 Bassman, and the second is a 2 watt AA Systems original called the Studio Classic.
The amplifiers in this series are a recording engineer's dream come true. They have a dynamic touch response that translates well in the recording process. Coupled with one of the de-tuned speaker cabinet designs by Sean Fokes of Mad Sound or Donnie Evans of Wood is Wonderful, these amps sound huge! Two watts never sounded so big and so sweet. As a player, I feel these are some of the best sounding and versatile models that I've ever built. I've used them for recording as well as on stage and find them to be at home in either venue. Although I prefer the detuned speaker designs, they can be used with any 4 or 8 ohm speaker cabinet. Use them with your four 12 cab or a single speaker open-back cabinet and I think you will like what you hear.
The amplifiers in this series come in a number of variations. The models shown in the photos are the "all tubes contained in the chassis" versions with a beautiful bloodwood base. If a more conventional look is what you like they can be built into a conventional chassis with a natural wood cabinet. De-tuned and open-back combo cabinets are also available. Let us know what your needs are and we will exceed them.
